Using the Elapsed Time Section

The top part of the interface works as an elapsed time calculator. You enter a start time and an end time in hours, minutes, and seconds; the unit labels can be clicked to change them to minutes, hours, or even days. There are no format restrictions for elapsed times – the only requirement is that the end value is greater than the start value. This section is ideal for measuring how long a task took when you know only the raw durations.

Using the Clock Time Section

Below it, the clock time calculator lets you work with actual times of day. First, choose between the 12‑hour (AM/PM) format and the 24‑hour format. Then input the hour, minute, and optional second for both the start and end times. A key feature is its ability to compute durations that start on one day and end on the next, for example from 10:45 PM to 6:30 AM. Once both times are entered, the result appears in hours, minutes, and seconds, with an option to view the duration in other units by clicking the unit display.

Manual Time Duration Calculation

To compute the time difference by hand, follow these steps:

1. Convert to 24‑hour format. For any PM time, add 12 to the hour (e.g., 3:20 PM becomes 15:20). AM times stay the same, except 12:00 AM becomes 00:00.
2. Align the columns. Write the later time above the earlier time, stacking hours, minutes, and seconds.
3. Subtract seconds first. If the top seconds are fewer, borrow one minute (add 60 seconds) from the minutes column.
4. Subtract minutes. If the top minutes are fewer, borrow one hour from the hours column and add 60 minutes to the top minutes.
5. Subtract hours. If the times span midnight (the end hour is smaller than the start hour), add 24 hours to the end time before subtracting.

Worked Example: 9:35 AM to 5:20 PM

• Convert 5:20 PM → 17:20.
• Set up: 17 h 20 min – 9 h 35 min.
• Since 20 < 35, borrow 1 hour from 17 (→ 16) and add 60 minutes: 20 + 60 = 80 min.
• Subtract: 16 h 80 min – 9 h 35 min = 7 h 45 min.

Cross‑Midnight Example: 9:50 PM to 7:40 AM

• Convert 9:50 PM → 21:50. The next day’s 7:40 AM is 7:40.
• Because the end hour (7) is smaller than the start hour (21), add 24 h to the end: 7:40 → 31:40.
• Now subtract: 31 h 40 min – 21 h 50 min. Borrow 1 hour (31→30, 40→100 min): 30 h 100 min – 21 h 50 min = 9 h 50 min.
