How Weighted Grades Work

When assignments contribute different amounts to the final grade, you must use a weighted average. The core formula is:

• $g_i$ – grade for component $i$ (as a number, percentage, or converted letter value)
• $w_i$ – weight assigned to that component (e.g., 0.5 for 50% or 2 for double weight)

If weights are given as percentages that sum to 100% (or 1 as decimals), the denominator equals 1 and the formula simplifies to the sum of the weighted grades.

Example Using Letter Grades

Convert letters to numbers first (A = 4, A– = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3, etc.). Suppose you have a quiz weighted 40% with a grade of B (3) and a project weighted 60% with a grade of A– (3.7). The calculation is:

$$\frac{(3 \times 0.4) + (3.7 \times 0.6)}{0.4 + 0.6} = \frac{1.2 + 2.22}{1} = 3.42$$

On the default scale, a 3.42 corresponds to a B+ letter grade (3.3–3.69). The tool does this conversion automatically.

Example Using Percentage Grades

Imagine three components: an essay worth 15% (score 67%), a midterm worth 35% (score 75%), and a final worth 50% (score 72%). The overall percentage is:

$$0.15 \times 67\% + 0.35 \times 75\% + 0.50 \times 72\% = 10.05\% + 26.25\% + 36\% = 72.3\% \approx 72\%$$

Under the default scale, 72% falls in the C– range (70–72%). The grade percentage calculator mode outputs both the overall percentage and the equivalent letter grade.

Example Using Point Grades

When teachers assign points, convert each score to a percentage by dividing by the maximum points. For three tests—70/100, 46/100, and 177/200—with weights 30%, 30%, and 40%:

$$\left(\frac{70}{100} \times 0.3\right) + \left(\frac{46}{100} \times 0.3\right) + \left(\frac{177}{200} \times 0.4\right) = 0.21 + 0.138 + 0.354 = 0.702 \approx 70.2\%$$

That rounds to 70% (a C– on the default scale). The point calculator also shows total earned points and the maximum possible points.

Using the Three Modes

The tool is divided into letter, percentage, and point sections:

• Letter grade mode – Set the grade type to “Letters,” enter each letter grade and its weight. The calculator converts letters to numeric values, computes the weighted average, and maps the result back to a letter using your chosen scale.
• Percentage mode – Choose “Percentage,” input the percentage scores together with their weights. The overall percentage appears along with the corresponding letter grade.
• Point mode – Select “Points,” enter points received and the maximum points for each assignment, and any weight. The calculator computes a combined percentage, letter grade, and total point ratio.

In all modes, you can enter up to 15 grades; additional rows appear as you fill in the last displayed field. For unweighted averages, simply leave the weights at their default value (1) or skip the weight fields.

Grading Scales and Customization

US schools use different grading scales. The tool provides a default scale with plus/minus grades, but you can modify thresholds in the Grading scale (thresholds) section. Below are two common scales:

Final Grade Planning

Because this tool also serves as a final grade calculator, you can enter all known grades and weights, then see what your current overall grade is. If you know the weight of an upcoming final exam, you can leave that score blank and use the calculator to determine the minimum score needed to reach a target grade—just consider it a variable and experiment with different values until the desired result appears.

Entering Weights Correctly

If your teacher assigns weights as percentages, enter them as decimals (e.g., 0.15 for 15%, 0.5 for 50%). When all weights sum to 1 (or 100%), the denominator in the weighted formula becomes 1, so the calculation is straightforward. For unweighted averages, keep each weight at 1 or simply ignore the weight column.
