Overview of the Army Physical Fitness Test
The Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) was the standard method for assessing U.S. soldiers' physical readiness from 1980 until its replacement by the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) in October 2020. In June 2025, the ACFT was itself succeeded by the Army Fitness Test (AFT). Despite no longer being the official test, the APFT remains a valuable benchmark for military fitness training and for understanding the history of U.S. Army fitness standards. This free APFT calculator online helps you compute your score for push‑ups, sit‑ups, and the 2‑mile run based on the original APFT scoring tables.
How the APFT Is Scored
The APFT awards points for each of the three events: up to 100 points per event for a maximum total of 300 points. To pass, a soldier must achieve at least 60 points (60%) in each event, giving a minimum passing total of 180 points. The APFT scoring system uses sex‑ and age‑adjusted charts that assign points based on the number of repetitions (for push‑ups and sit‑ups) or the completion time for the 2‑mile run. The APFT score calculator automates this process, instantly returning individual event points and the cumulative score.
Test Event Requirements
Push‑ups (2 minutes): The soldier starts in the front leaning rest position. During each repetition, the body is lowered as a single unit until the upper arms are at least parallel to the ground, and then pressed back up to full arm extension. The entire body must remain rigid and move in a straight line; any deviation results in a disallowed repetition.
Sit‑ups (2 minutes): With knees bent at a 45‑degree angle, the soldier raises the upper body forward until the neck is above the base of the spine (vertical position). The torso then lowers until the bottom of the shoulder blades touch the ground. The feet may be held by a partner.
2‑mile Run: Completed on a flat course, the run is timed and should be finished as quickly as possible. Walking is allowed but is strongly discouraged. Runners may not receive physical assistance or touch other participants.
Understanding the APFT Scoring Charts
The official APFT standards are published in tables that differ by gender and age. Eight age groups are defined: 17‑21, 22‑26, 27‑31, 32‑36, 37‑41, 42‑46, 47‑51, and 52‑56. To find your score manually, you locate the correct table for your sex and age group, then find the row with your repetition count or run time; the intersecting cell shows the points earned. Because these tables are large and can be difficult to navigate, using an online APFT calculator is a simpler and more accurate alternative.
Additional Fitness Standards
In addition to meeting APFT scores, U.S. Army personnel must satisfy body composition requirements. The Army Body Fat Calculator or Navy Body Fat Calculator can be used to check whether a soldier falls within the allowable body fat percentage. A standard body fat calculator is also available for civilian use.

FAQ
1. Is the APFT still the official fitness test for the U.S. Army?
No. The APFT was replaced by the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) in October 2020, and the ACFT was itself replaced by the Army Fitness Test (AFT) in June 2025. The APFT is no longer used for official testing, but its scoring system remains a reference.
2. How many points do I need to pass the APFT?
You need at least 60 points (60%) in each event—push-ups, sit-ups, and 2-mile run. That gives a minimum total passing score of 180 out of 300 points.
3. What are the correct push-up standards according to the APFT?
A correct push-up requires lowering the entire body as a single unit until the upper arms are at least parallel to the ground, then pushing back up to full arm extension. The body must remain rigid and move in a straight line.
4. How does age affect APFT scoring?
The APFT scoring tables are divided into eight age groups (17-21, 22-26, 27-31, 32-36, 37-41, 42-46, 47-51, 52-56). The same number of repetitions or run time can yield different point values depending on the age group.
